About the company

A kiwi brand that has been a quiet success story for the past decade is looking to expand their engineering team with their next Senior PHP Developer (Although, if you’ve got Rails, Java, C#, or even Python and want to give PHP a whirl, let’s chat!).

The organization has been quietly building a product to make everyday working kiwi’s lives safer. It’s a weird thing to say about a company that has been going for 12+ years, but they are only just hitting their stride. If you’ve ever thought about putting your development skills to better use and making a real impact, this is the role for you.

About the role

This role is for a Senior PHP Developer, but skills in another backend language is great as long as you are ready to hit up your favourite PHP Youtuber before starting.

Technologies in play are Laravel, React for the front end, all hosted on AWS. The perfect candidate would have all 3, but a willingness to learn new skills and a curiosity to always be improving is much more important for this role.

Since the role is working on a product that spans web, mobile, and even hardware, a desire to problem solve across all platforms and lend a hand wherever possible is very high on our wishlist. It doesn’t mean you’ll need to be brushing up on your iOS/Android skills, but being a team player and helping a mobile developer debug that annoying intermittent API issue is super important.

What you will bring

You’ll be someone who has worked in a product development environment for (hopefully) 7+ years. You will need to be fullstack as the team is small and everyone chips in when needed, so knowing your backend, frontend, and how to get all of that into a cloud environment is important.

You will need all/most/able-to-fake-it of :

  • Experience with a backend development language (Preferably PHP/Lavavel, or willing to learn)
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks. We use React but experience with Angular/Vue also considered.
  • Experience working with cloud products such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Great attention to detail where you can notice that a button is just slightly off by about 7px
  • Autonomous enough to be given a task and get it from concept to production
And some/none-but-willing-to-learn of :
  • IAAC with cloud infrastructure in Terraform, CDK, ARM/Bicep etc
  • Experience working in a hybrid/remote team
  • Experience building applications that scale to thousands, if not millions of users or devices would be great to have
  • If you know your sudo from your su and have some linux chops, that would also be beneficial

Above all, a willingness to learn and an interest in getting stuck into technology you may have never touched before is more important than exact number of years.

Additional information

This role is preferably in Dunedin so that face to face communication can happen when needed. But for the right person, a remote role could be considered.

The role is only open to candidates with existing working rights within NZ.
